About Unclocked

Unclocked is an original catalog of 1001 ways to live and earn without a conventional 9-to-5 job. It is not a reproduction of Tuli Kupferberg’s 1961 satire 1001 Ways to Live Without Working, or of any other copyrighted book. The entries here are contemporary livelihoods, crafts, seasonal trades, media practices, and living arrangements drawn from public reporting and practitioner communities.
Each card names a path, describes it in plain language, lists steps, skills, materials, and a minimum initial capital figure, cites a primary public source, and points to people or rooms that have done a recognizable version of the work. Social profiles are public examples — Instagram, Xiaohongshu, Facebook, LinkedIn, X, YouTube, and others — not a directory of private contacts and not an endorsement.
What we read
- Bureau of Labor Statistics occupational and self-employment material
- Upwork Freelance Forward research on independent work
- Nomad List and documented solo businesses (levels.io, Justin Welsh)
- Etsy Seller Handbook and SCORE / SBA small-business guidance
- Public creator documentation (YouTube, Substack, Xiaohongshu culture)
- Reported stories of people who left jobs: travel advisors, homesteaders, rural video makers (Li Ziqi, Dianxi Xiaoge), van-life documentarians
What this is not
Not financial, legal, medical, or immigration advice. Not a promise that any path will pay rent. Not a list of scams, theft, or “hacks” that harm other people. Minimum capital is the smallest cash outlay to take a first paying client — checked against public docs (YouTube Partner Program, Etsy, Rover, Taskrabbit, Preply, Airbnb, USDA, SCORE/SBA) — and will still be wrong for your city. First-money ranges are typical, not guarantees. Licenses and visas are local. Verify everything before you quit anything.
Currency amounts convert from US dollars with indicative public rates. They are not live market quotes.
